GALLIUM NITRATE - INJECTION
(GAL-ee-um NYE-trate)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Ganite
WARNING: If you have high levels of calcium in the body caused by cancer (cancer-related hypercalcemia), the use of glalium nitrate with other drugs that affect kidneys (e.G., gentamicin, tobramycin, amphotericin B) can lead to severe kidney problems. If one of these otehr medications must be used, gallium nitrate must be stopped.
Fulids (hydration) should be given for several days after the other drug has been stopped.
Notify your doctor immediately if you have increased urination at night, weakness, confusion, muscle cramps, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, or unpleasant taste. Your docotr will be monitoring you closely to check your progress.
USES: This medication is used to treat high levels of calcium in the blood often associated with cancer.
HOW TO USE: This medication is diluted in fluid and slowly infused into a vein. This medication is usually gvien with large amounts of fluids.
Your intake and otuput of fluids will be monitored closely while taking that medication.
SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, or metallic taste. If these symptoms continue or become bothersome, infrom your doctor. Notify your doctor if you develop: breathnig difficulties, rapid heartbeat, increased thirst, vision changes, ringing in the ears, trouble hearing. Blood tests may be done frequently while taking that mdeication to evaluate its effectiveness and check for side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor if you have: pre-existing kidney disorders, any allergeis. This medication should be used only if clearly neeedd during pregnancy or while breast-feeding.
Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take, especially: aminoglycoside antibiotics, amphotericin B. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
NOTES: Do not share that porduct with others.
MISSED DOSE: Check with your dcotor.
STORAGE: Store at room temperature away from sunlight.
